Ocmulgee Mounds National Park and Preserve

  • Isn’t Ocmulgee Mounds already a national park?

The park is currently a National Historical Park. Yes the park is managed by the National Park Service, however, the NPS has 19 different service units (i.e. national battlefields, birthplaces, monuments, highways, etc). However, the top “National Park” are the Yellowstones, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons etc. There are currently only 63 of the top status parks in the country and Georgia does not have one.

  • How long does it take after the bill is introduced?

After the legislation is introduced in congress, it is not guaranteed to pass. This is why it is important for individuals to tell their members of congress that they support the park. The newly introduced bill must go through the congressional process and after it is passed, it will be signed by the President, making it the full National Park and Preserve.

  • What can people do to show their support?

Because we cannot give an exact timeline, as we have to wait for Congress, it is important that people follow the ONPPI social Media for updates and that they show their support on the Add Your Name campaign.
